Becoming a parent is a unique and beautiful journey, but for some, the path to parenthood can be filled with unexpected twists and turns. Sinead Finn’s story is a testament to the strength, resilience, and unwavering hope that many parents exhibit when facing fertility challenges and pregnancy complications. In this podcast episode, I talk with Sinead as we delve into her remarkable journey to motherhood, with her experience of giving birth to twins, Harper and Declan.
What’s It Like Giving Birth to Twins?
Sinead’s journey to motherhood culminated in the joyous birth of her twins, Harper and Declan. The birth of twins is a unique and awe-inspiring experience, and every mother’s story is different. Sinead’s experience highlights the excitement, nerves, and pure joy that come with welcoming two little miracles into the world.
Twins Pregnancy Story
Sinead’s path to motherhood was not without its share of challenges. Her journey began with struggles related to fertility issues stemming from endometriosis and a thyroid disorder. After a year of trying to conceive, Sinead and her husband consulted a fertility specialist who diagnosed her with endometriosis, a condition that can affect a woman’s ability to get pregnant.
Sinead underwent laparoscopic surgery to address the endometriosis, and remarkably, she became pregnant naturally just one month after the procedure. However, her joy was short-lived, as a 12-week ultrasound revealed a missed miscarriage. This devastating news was followed by the diagnosis of a partial molar pregnancy, an extremely rare condition characterised by an imbalance of genetic material that can lead to cancer-like growth.
The subsequent journey included two D&C procedures to remove the remaining tissue and a waiting period for her hCG levels to return to zero. Sinead and her husband then tried natural conception without success before deciding to pursue IVF due to concerns about poor egg quality. Despite three rounds of IVF, they had no embryos for implantation.
Another surgery to address endometriosis was followed by another IVF attempt, but the outcome remained the same. Faced with the heartbreak of fertility challenges, Sinead contemplated using donor eggs but ultimately decided to take a break. During this break, they embarked on a medicated IUI (Intrauterine Insemination), which miraculously resulted in a twin pregnancy.
