Make feeding decisions from a place of confidence, not fear
Supplementing formula while breastfeeding is a topic that can feel confusing, emotionally charged, and often surrounded by guilt or uncertainty. As mums, we’re told “breast is best,” yet so many of us find ourselves reaching for formula—whether by choice, necessity, or hospital recommendation. But how do we know when it’s the right time to introduce formula? And how can we do it in a way that still protects our breastfeeding goals?
In this podcast episode, I speak with the wonderful Jaimie Zaki, nurse, doula, mum of five, and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, to unpack these very questions.
What started as a discussion about preparing for breastfeeding success quickly turned into something even more valuable—a practical, honest deep-dive into how formula can support (rather than sabotage) your feeding journey when used wisely.
Why This Topic Matters
Many mums begin their journey with every intention to exclusively breastfeed—but sometimes things shift. And often, that shift includes introducing formula.
We know that in the U.S., around 20% of babies are given formula within the first two days—even though 80% of mothers start out breastfeeding. In Australia, the stats aren’t much better.
This isn’t always because breastfeeding is failing. More often, it’s a lack of support, preparation, or understanding that leads mums to feel they have no other option. That’s exactly why this conversation with Jaimie is so important.
Formula Isn’t Failure
Let’s be clear: this isn’t about formula shaming. Not at all. Formula can be a tool—a bridge—when used wisely.
What Jaimie and I explored is how supplementing can either support or derail breastfeeding, depending on how and why it’s introduced. Her message is simple: use formula if you need to, but do it from a place of confidence, not fear.
Red Flags to Look For
Before jumping into formula, Jaimie recommends looking out for signs like:
- Low weight gain (especially dropping growth curve lines)
- Fewer than 6 wet nappies per day
- Signs of poor milk transfer
- Excessive fussiness without clear cause
But she also reminds us: crying doesn’t always mean hunger. Sometimes, it’s gas, fatigue, or overstimulation.
Learning to Advocate in the Birth Suite
One of the most powerful parts of our chat was around birth advocacy. Jaimie shared how many feeding decisions are influenced (or even pressured) within the hospital—often without mums having the confidence or information to push back.
Birth interventions, IV fluids, and even hospital policies can all affect early breastfeeding. It doesn’t mean you’ve failed—it just means there’s often a reason for challenges that follow. And when you know what to look for, you’re in a better place to act.
Trusting Your Instincts and Asking for Help
If you take one thing from this episode, let it be this: your feeding journey doesn’t need to be perfect to be positive.
Whether you’re a first-time mum or on baby number three, the key is to make choices that feel informed and aligned with your goals. And when you need help—ask. IBCLCs, telehealth options, and online support now make it easier than ever to get guidance, even in rural or regional areas.
Supplementing formula while breastfeeding doesn’t make you a bad mum—it makes you a mum doing her best.
In this episode, Jaimie shares such a wealth of practical, compassionate guidance to help you navigate that decision with clarity. Whether you’re struggling with low supply, overwhelmed with advice, or just want to know your options, this is a must-listen.
