Pregnancy is often seen as a time of excitement and joy, but for many women, it can also be a journey filled with grief, uncertainty, and resilience. In this podcast episode, I had the privilege of sitting down with Brianne, a long-time member of FitNest Mama, as she shared her deeply personal experience of pregnancy after loss, conceiving through grief, and making the heartbreaking decision to terminate a pregnancy for medical reasons (TFMR).

Whether you’ve experienced loss yourself or know someone who has, this conversation is an important reminder that you are not alone, and support is available.

Conceiving Through Grief

When Brianne first joined FitNest Mama, she was navigating her first postpartum recovery after welcoming her daughter, Elle. A few years later, she and her husband felt ready to try for a second baby. However, just before they officially started trying, Brianne’s world was turned upside down.

Her sister-in-law, whom she considered a sister, passed away suddenly due to postnatal depression and suicide. The grief was overwhelming. The shock of losing someone she loved so dearly completely disrupted the timeline she had envisioned for her family.

Brianne opened up about the emotional complexities of trying to conceive while mourning, describing the push and pull of wanting to move forward while feeling stuck in the past. Potentially like many other women who have conceived after loss, she struggled with:

  • The impact of grief on her body and fertility.
  • The guilt of longing for new life while still mourning.
  • The pressure to get “back on track” with her family plans.

It took six months before she conceived again. While she was thrilled, her journey was about to take another devastating turn.

Termination for Medical Reasons

At 13 weeks, Brianne received a call from her GP. Her Non-Invasive Prenatal Test (NIPT) results showed a high risk for Kleinfelter Syndrome (47 XXY), a chromosomal condition that affects male reproductive and hormonal health.

She described the agonising wait for confirmation, desperately scouring the internet for any information or personal stories—but finding very little. The condition is not immediately life-threatening, but it carries lifelong uncertainties, including infertility, developmental delays, and hormone imbalances.

When faced with a “grey diagnosis”, where the outcome is unknown and there is no clear right or wrong decision, the weight of the choice became immensely difficult. Brianne and her husband struggled with:

  • The lack of clear medical guidance on how severe the condition could be.
  • The fear of making the wrong choice for their baby and family.
  • The isolation that often comes with TFMR, as many partners feel unsure how to express their emotions.

After confirming the diagnosis through chorionic villus sampling (CVS), they made the painful decision to terminate the pregnancy. Brianne described the moment she took the prescribed medication to begin the process as one of the hardest moments of her life.

In sharing her experience, she emphasised that every woman’s choice is deeply personal and that support, not judgment, is what women need most in these moments.

Pregnancy After Loss

After losing her baby, Brianne knew she wanted to try again. But pregnancy after loss is never straightforward. The emotional weight of previous grief made her next steps both exciting and terrifying.

She shared how:

  • Exercise became a key part of her healing process. Movement helped regulate her emotions and gave her a sense of control.
  • Support groups, like Pink Elephants and Red Nose Australia, provided her with connection and validation.
  • She had to navigate the heightened anxiety that comes with trying again after loss.

Pregnancy after loss is a journey that many women silently struggle through. The joy of conceiving again is often tinged with fear—fear of another loss, fear of complications, fear of going through grief all over again.

But Brianne’s story is also one of resilience and hope. Her strength in sharing her experience will undoubtedly help others who are navigating a similar journey.

The Importance of Support

As we wrapped up our conversation, Brianne and I talked about the importance of breaking the silence around pregnancy loss and termination for medical reasons. Too often, these experiences are shrouded in secrecy and shame, leaving women to grieve alone.

If you or someone you love is going through a similar journey, please know that support is available. Here are some incredible resources:

  • Pink Elephants Support Network – Community and guidance for miscarriage and TFMR.
  • Red Nose Australia – Support for pregnancy and infant loss.
  • Megan Devine’s book: It’s Okay That You’re Not Okay – A compassionate guide to navigating grief.

Sharing Brianne’s story was emotional, powerful, and deeply important. Pregnancy after loss is not just about conceiving again—it’s about learning to live with grief, finding hope, and honouring both the past and the future.

If you are navigating pregnancy after loss, please be kind to yourself. Surround yourself with people who understand, and know that there is no right or wrong way to grieve, heal, or move forward.

Frequently asked Questions (FAQs)

How do I cope with the emotional toll of trying to conceive after loss?

Navigating pregnancy after loss can be emotionally challenging. Seeking support through therapy, support groups, and gentle self-care practices like exercise can help. It’s also important to allow yourself time to grieve while embracing hope for the future.

What are some ways to manage anxiety during pregnancy after loss?

Anxiety is common after experiencing loss. Regular check-ins with your healthcare provider, mindfulness practices, and connecting with other women who have gone through similar experiences can help ease fear and uncertainty. Finding a healthcare team that understands your emotional needs is also essential.

How do I talk to my partner about pregnancy loss and trying again?

Open and honest communication is key. Some partners may process grief differently or struggle to express their emotions. Seeking couples counselling or simply setting aside time for intentional conversations can help both of you feel supported.

What support is available for women who have experienced TFMR?

Organisations like Pink Elephants Support Network and Red Nose Australia offer specialised support for women who have experienced TFMR. Speaking with a grief counsellor and joining online communities can also provide comfort and validation.

How soon after loss can I try to conceive again?

The timing varies for every woman, depending on physical recovery and emotional readiness. Some may feel ready within a few months, while others need more time. It’s important to consult with your healthcare provider and listen to your own body and emotions when making this decision.
